The 1000-room Statler Hilton is a fine example of early US modernism, built in 1956 and designed by William Tabler. Empty for about 10 years, the Statler is located in a "hot" area of redevelopment and opposite a new one-block park about to be constructed in the heart of downtown.
The Mayor's move to "clean up" downtown by enforcing building codes is starting to hit home. The immediate danger is to 508 Park Avenue. 508 is not a modern structure, but nevertheless a fine building and incredibly culturally significant. It is where Robert Johnson, the great blues musician, recorded 13 of his finest songs (one of his only two recording sessions) as well a Bob Wills and supposedly even Charlie Parker. Eric Clapton, in his homage to Johnson, recorded a set of acoustic blues there in 2004.
The Statler Hilton is a modern structure and is caught up in the same "clean-up" initiative.
