DOCOMOMO/US Florida and AIA Jacksonville again are teaming up for a symposium and tour on the Recent Past on March 7, 2009. This year will highlight some of the most interesting work from the beaches of Northeast Florida: Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Ponte Vedra Beach, etc.

Morning presentations will run kick off at 9:00 a.m. at St. Pauls By The Sea Episcopal Church in Jacksonville Beach. This spectacular building (designed with graceful brutalism) is a 1966 product of Georgia architect Blake Ellis. Ellis will be on hand to talk about the building. Other presenters will include DOCOMOMO/US Florida members from South Florida and several of Jacksonville's best-know architects from the mid-20th century.

The tour will feature Paul Rudolph's Milam House, his last Florida house and a number of residences designed by William Morgan. The array of Morgan dwellings will include his 1974 underground Dune House, which is presently on the market and potentially may be destroyed.

Morning presentations will cost $10. The bus tour will cost $55 and includes a box lunch. DOCOMOMO/US Florida will reward sponsors with free admission to all events, including a fantastic Friday night party at Gilbert Spindel's 1959 design, Geodesica,
